What Are Fire Ants?
Fire ants are an invasive species of ants that thrive in warm, moist habitats. There are four types of fire ants, the red imported fire ant, southern fire ant, desert fire ant, and tropical fire ant – all of them recognized for their reddish-black color. The red imported fire ant has been disrupting homes and businesses in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas since the 1950s. While fire ants would establish their nests in any soft soil, they favor open and sunny areas like lawns, golf courses, pastures, parks, and meadows. They may also establish colonies in decaying tree bases, logs, and stumps. These ants are a competitive and aggressive species that when disrupted will rush in and swarm up surfaces (like your arms or legs), ready to bite or sting. Their stinger produces fire ant venom called solenopsin, which is very painful and leaves itchy and burning blisters that can last for a week.
